Mw3 uses the same demo system as in cod4, but just in a slightly different way.
In Cod4 you had to use the /record command in order to record a demo, mw3 does this automatically, using the Theater feature. it's a cool feature, but you can only store a certain amount of demos..
in this tutorial i will be explaining how to store your demos so you can rewatch them later and use other demos you have downloaded on the great interwebs. but first, let me explain how it all works
How does the demo system work?
Modern Warfare 3 Automatically records the demos for you, they are placed in the theater section.
Demos are also stored in your mw3 file directory, for this we navigate to:
Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty modern warfare 3\main\demo
or the directory where your mw3 is installed, incase you are using a client like Repz or Tekno
in the demo folder you will most likely see some weird files with names like 'x02ec_54bfd666' or 'x0217_54bfd5cb'
These are the demo files of the clips in your theater, if you sort them by date and put the demo folder next to the theater section, you can choose the demo you want and back it up.
you dont have to worry about the names, you may rename them to something like: 6man_msr_dome_x02ec_54bfd666 or something like that, but it is not necessary to keep the x02ec_54bfd666 part.
imagine the following:
fastforward 5 weeks, you want to record your old clip, but it has already been removed from the theater section.
luckily, you have it stored! but how do you put it back in the theater section?
navigate to the demo folder, find a demo you do not wish to use/one you can get rid of, copy the name of that demo
now find the old demo you wish to use and rename it to the demo you just copied the name of.
now place it in the demo folder and it will be in the theater section! have fun!
